Cost ranges

Typical kitchen renovation costs in Ontario

Kitchen renovation costs in Ontario vary more than almost any other home improvement project — a cabinet refresh and a full gut-and-rebuild with structural changes are both called kitchen renovations, but they are very different in scope and price. These ranges reflect real project costs, not marketing figures.

$15,000 – $25,000Cabinet and surface refresh

New cabinet doors and hardware, countertops, backsplash, and paint — existing cabinet boxes stay. Updates the look significantly without full demolition.

$25,000 – $45,000Full cabinet replacement

All cabinets, countertops, backsplash, and flooring replaced. Appliances stay in place and plumbing remains in current locations. The most common full kitchen renovation.

$45,000 – $75,000+Full renovation with layout changes

Everything replaced, with structural wall modifications, plumbing relocations, and electrical upgrades. Includes new flooring, trim, and painting.

$75,000+High-end or complex renovation

Custom cabinetry, stone countertops, premium appliance packages, island additions, and full design coordination. Common in high-expectation markets like Thornbury and the Blue Mountains.

What moves the number

Factors that drive kitchen renovation costs

1

Cabinet quality and type

Cabinets are the single largest cost item in most kitchen renovations. Stock cabinets are the most affordable; semi-custom and custom cabinets cost progressively more. The difference shows in fit, material quality, and hardware options.

2

Countertop material

Laminate countertops are the most cost-effective. Quartz and engineered stone are mid-range. Natural stone, live-edge, and specialty surfaces command premium pricing and installation skill.

3

Layout and structural changes

Keeping the layout intact keeps costs down. Moving an island, removing a wall, or relocating the sink or range adds significant labour and often requires permits.

4

Plumbing and electrical upgrades

Older homes frequently have electrical panels and plumbing that need upgrading before a renovation can proceed safely. This adds cost that is not visible in a surface quote.

5

Flooring scope

Whether the kitchen flooring is replaced alone or as part of a broader renovation affects cost. Matching existing flooring in adjacent rooms can also complicate material selection.

6

Hidden conditions in older homes

Opening walls in older homes reveals what was behind them: outdated wiring, galvanised plumbing, subfloor damage, or moisture issues. These must be addressed before rebuilding and add to the final cost.

The only accurate number is a site estimate

Kitchen renovation costs cannot be accurately quoted from a photo or a floor plan. The condition of the existing plumbing, electrical, and subfloor; the specific layout changes involved; and the materials chosen all matter too much for a number to be reliable without a walk-through.
