What makes Thornbury different
Thornbury has a different character from the rest of the corridor. The older streets near the harbour and the Beaver River hold some genuinely lovely heritage housing, and much of the newer work is high-end — retirees downsizing from the city who want a smaller house finished to a much higher specification than the one they left.
That shapes the work. Renovations here are more often about quality of finish and getting details right than about square footage. Trim, tile setting, cabinetry fit and the transitions between materials get looked at closely, and rightly so.
The Beaver River and the mill pond mean some properties have real groundwater to manage. And heritage homes near the core bring their own constraint: you cannot solve a moisture problem by wrapping the outside of a century building in modern materials without thinking carefully about how the wall assembly dries.
Why we get called in Thornbury
Heritage buildings that need to breathe
Older Thornbury homes were built with vapour-open assemblies. Sealing them up with the wrong products traps moisture inside the wall. We choose materials that let these buildings dry the way they were designed to.
Beaver River groundwater
Properties near the river and the mill pond can have a genuinely high water table. That calls for drainage and sump design, not just sealing the inside face of the wall.
High finish expectations
A lot of our Thornbury work is for clients who have renovated before and know what good looks like. We quote line by line, set out tile properly, and do not hide rough work behind trim.
Orchard-country clay soils
The apple-growing land around Thornbury and Clarksburg carries heavy clay in places. Clay holds water against foundations and moves with frost — footings and drainage need to account for it.
